Founding History
Bossier City, located in the northwest area of Louisiana, dates back to 1835, when it was known as Bennett’s Bluff. Bennett was the man who earlier had helped lay out Shreveport, Bossier City’s neighbor across the Red River. At the time, Bennett and his business partner, James Hampshire Cane, owned a plantation on the Bossier side of the river. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Bennett married his partner and the Bossier plantation became Cane’s Landing, the predecessor of Cane City and finally, Bossier City, an important part of Bossier Parish, which was created by the State Legislature in 1843.
